1. Rain *and I can't stress this enough* boots!
Yes rain boots are my number 1 item to have in Japan. If no one has told you yet, I'm telling you now, Japan has a rainy season in the middle of summer and you shouldn't underestimate it. If you are planning to spend July in Japan get a pair of rain boots. I'm not talking about regular waterproof shoes. You know those plastic boots that fishermen wear. Yes, get one of those and get a stylish one that will suit your work clothes. You will be wearing those to work, a lot!
