Japan is the country that owns the most natural hot springs in the world created from its volcanic terrain, and Japanese people have known for a long time to take advantage of this natural resource to get natural hot water to make hot springs (called Onsen) which is good for health. Every onsen in Japan seems to have its own special features, let's explore with us the interesting inside the top famous areas for Japanese onsens!


1. Beppu Onsen Town

The Beppu Onsen area is located in Oita, in the Kyushu region. This is the area with the largest number of hot springs erupting in Japan. Natural mineral springs with moderately hot water quality combined with cool natural scenery give you a feeling of comfortable enjoyment.


Access: It takes about 10 minutes on foot from Beppu Station.

2. Yufuin Onsen Town

The town of Yufuin Onsen boasts many hot springs, ranking 2nd in the nation. Yufuin Onsen has a temperature of about 41 - 98 degrees Celsius. In addition to possessing a peaceful setting, the water quality at Yufuin Onsen also has the ability to relieve pain from bone and joint diseases, etc.


Access: It takes about 10 minutes on foot from Yufuin Station, and about 60 minutes by car from Oita Airport.

3. Kusatsu Onsen Town

Kusatsu is the area with the largest number of natural hot springs in Japan, located in Gunma Prefecture. Kusatsu onsen is said to have high-quality hot springs, natural flow, and the ability to warm the body and possibly kill bacteria. The heart of Kusatsu town is the majestic Yubatake hot spring system that flows around the clock. In addition to Yubatake, there are five other hot spring sources in Kusatsu: Shirahata, Bandaiko, Sainokawara, Nigawa, and Jizo. Each water source has different water quality. For example, the Yubatake onsen is gentle on the skin, and the Shirahata onsen is milky white.


Transportation: It takes about 4 hours to travel from Tokyo Station or Shinjuku Station.

4. Ibusuki Onsen Town

Located in Kagoshima Prefecture, the Ibusuki hot spring area is more special than some other onsen when it has a hot sand beach called Sunamushi. The experience of bathing in a hot spring here will be slightly different from another onsen because you can wear a Yukata and bury yourself in the hot sand, this action is considered very good for health because it helps blood circulation and removes excess energy In the body. The waters at Ibusuki are considered good for health, but this form of hot sand bath is not suitable for pregnant women and people with heart disease.

5. Kurokawa Onsen Town
